7 steps to deal with burns

When you experience a burn, swift reaction is crucial. This includes immediate cooling of the burned skin, gentle drying, and covering it with a dry dressing. However, remember that more serious burns require medical evaluation. Here are 7 steps to effectively deal with first and second-degree burns.

How to deal with burns

Only minor first and second-degree burns can be treated solely at home. What are their symptoms? Skin redness, slight pain, minor swelling. What to do?

  1. Immediately remove clothing from the burned area – if it hasn’t adhered to the skin. Remove rings and bracelets from the affected area.
  2. Cool the burned area by submerging it in cold water or pouring a continuous stream over it for 10 – 15 minutes (or at least until the pain subsides), and after drying, cover it with a dry dressing made of sterile gauze.
  3. However, if you feel pain, cover the affected area with a cooling and regenerating foam from the pharmacy (panthenol).
  4. For severe discomfort, take a pain reliever.
  5. Gently place a towel soaked in cold water or lime water (from the pharmacy) on the burned areas. For severe burns, call emergency services!
  6. Keep the burned parts of the body (if possible) slightly elevated. This helps prevent congestion and alleviates pain.
  7. Remember not to puncture blisters, apply ointments, creams, or other fats to the burned skin, or cover it with cotton, lignin, or plasters.

Before taking any action, thoroughly cool the burned skin. More severe or extensive burns, blisters, or burns to the face, hands, or groin must be assessed by a doctor.
