Watermelon – The Perfect Potency Booster
Watermelon juice is one of my favorites due to its wonderful taste, vibrant color, and refreshing properties. Watermelon has a very high water content (almost 92%), and with only 6% sugar content, it is naturally very sweet. Like many other fruits, it is an excellent source of vitamin C, and its red color indicates that it is a natural source of lycopene, an important carotenoid known for its antioxidant and health-promoting properties.
Lycopene in Watermelon
In a study conducted by Dr. Bhimu Patil from the Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center at Texas A&M University in College Station, it was discovered that naturally occurring compounds like lycopene, a carotenoid, along with another compound called citrulline, may have health benefits. After consumption, citrulline is converted into arginine, an amino acid that has beneficial effects on the heart and circulatory system. Citrulline and arginine, besides their positive impact on the heart, also stimulate the immune system and can be helpful for obese individuals and those with type 2 diabetes.
Watermelon Acts Like Viagra
Arginine also enhances the release of nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels – it has the same fundamental effect as Viagra. Therefore, it aids in treating erectile dysfunction and may even prevent it. All of this means that this naturally sweet superfruit allows for the treatment of conditions such as angina, hypertension, and other cardiovascular diseases without the use of medication, and it even enhances your libido.
Tips on Watermelon
It is better to store watermelon whole to prevent loss of lycopene content. Leave it uncut at room temperature until consumption. Once cut, store it in the refrigerator. To enjoy watermelon to the fullest, consume it without any additions, without combining it with other foods, even other fruits.
During a meal composition training course, a motto was coined for watermelon and other melons: “Eat it alone or leave it alone.” Eating watermelon by itself promotes the full absorption of phytonutrients, which the body will digest within 20 minutes. It is also advisable to drink watermelon juice on an empty stomach.
This enticing fruit not only delights the taste buds but also offers a myriad of health benefits, making it a delightful addition to your diet.
