Test Yourself for Age-related Macular Degeneration. You may be in danger

Detect Age-related Macular Degeneration early with the Amsler Grid test. Developed by Prof. Marc Amsler, it’s a simple self-exam for vision abnormalities. Follow the procedure for each eye to catch signs of AMD and seek timely treatment.

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a degeneration of the macula associated with aging. It causes loss of visual acuity and central vision. There are two types of AMD. In 90 percent of cases, the milder dry form develops: vision deterioration progresses slowly over months or years. The wet form threatens sudden vision loss: it can occur within a few days. It often results from the dry AMD form.

Age-related Macular Degeneration Diagnosis

If you suspect Age-related Macular Degeneration in yourself, perform the Amsler Grid test. It has been considered one of the simplest methods for self-examining vision for several decades. The author of the test grid was ophthalmologist Prof. Marc Amsler from Zurich. The grid is a square with a side length of 10 cm, with black lines dividing it into smaller squares with side lengths of 5 mm. There is a distinct point in the middle of the grid.

Amsler Grid Test Procedure

You need to do it separately for each eye. If you wear glasses, put them on. Cover one eye and place the grid 30-40 cm away from you. Look at the central point and without blinking, observe the remaining part of the grid. If you see that all the other lines are straight and the squares are even, your macula is healthy. With vision disturbances, the straight lines bend, and the squares may appear larger or smaller. Some lines may become invisible when staring at the grid for a moment and seeing a distorted image; then, go to an optometrist.
